Weekend Recap: More of the Same

Starlin Castro had a nice weekend.

Starlin Castro had a nice weekend.

The St. Louis Cardinals continue to make a joke of the division “race”, taking two games against the Kansas City Royals before having Sunday’s game called on account of rain.

It doesn’t matter how many (or which) players go down with injuries. They keep winning.

Okay, let’s dial it back for a minute. The truth of the matter is that they’re not improving their lead. But much of that is because the Pittsburgh Pirates have been playing a bit out of their minds as well.

The Cards moved 6.5 games up in the division on May 5th and they have yet to open up a bigger lead than that. That lead shrank as low as 2.5 games on May 23rd, but they then won 5 straight to improve the lead again. They were 6.5 games up on either the Pirates or Chicago Cubs every day between June 4th and 13th.

So they’re doing okay.

The Pirates pulled off a 3-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies, including two extra-inning, walk-off, 1-0 shutout victories. They have shut out opponents four times in their last 7 games.

The Cubs also had a pair of walk-off victories, both coming on the weekend games and both coming on base hits by Starlin Castro. They took 3 games out of 4 in an extended series at home against the Cincinnati Reds.

After winning the first two games of a 4-game set, the Milwaukee Brewers lost on Saturday and Sunday against the Washington Nationals.
